Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is one of the founding fathers of modern architecture, and in 2003 was commissioned to design the pavilion for The Serpentine Gallery. This is an account of his sketches, architectural plans and a photographic documentary of the Pavilion's construction, and is an important critical account of this renowned artist.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2003, by the seminal Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, was his first completed structure in the UK. Situated on the gallery's lawn from June 20th to September 14th, it offered visitors an opportunity to experience a space designed by one of the founding figures of modern architecture.

Oscar Niemeyer was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1907, where he graduated from the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio in 1934, before joining a team of architects collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health in the city.

Throughout the 1950s, he designed ground-breaking public and corporate buildings in Brazil. From 1958 he became chief architect of Nova Cap, the organisation charged with the creation of Brasilia, Brazil's new capital city. The work he did on this extraordinary project, which included two of his masterpieces, the 1958-60 Congreso Nacional and the 1960 Catedral Metropolitana, brought him international acclaim.

In 1964 a political coup forced him into exile in France, where he designed the Headquarters of the French Communist Party, two Universities in Algeria and several important buildings in Italy. With the end of the Brazilian dictatorship he returned to his native country. Since then he has continued to push the boundaries of architecture with such breathtaking schemes as the Memorial to Latin America in Sao Paulo (1986-91) and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niteroi (1991).

Among many other international honours, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize for Architecture in 1988.

Love the lotion, hate the browning cream
Love the lotion have used multiple bottles. It really does help prolong a suntan. Very moisturizing very nice scent. Like a you know Hawaiian tropical coconut pineapple scent little plumeria in there. But the bronzing cream stinks to high heaven. It was sticky and it was gross so I never used it and I won’t buy it again. Definitely by the lotion, but not the bronzer.

Excellent mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin.
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Set name: Tube - 3 oz.
I’ve been using the Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen, and it’s become a staple in my routine. As someone with sensitive skin, I really appreciate that it’s fragrance-free and uses zinc oxide, providing great protection without causing any irritation or breakouts. It goes on smoothly, isn't overly greasy, and the water resistance holds up well for outdoor activities. The smart cap technology is a nice touch, too. Highly recommended if you’re looking for effective, non-irritating sun protection.

No chemicals that will be harmful!
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 2), Set name: Tube - 5 oz. 2-Pack
Ordered this mineral sunscreen looking for something simple and effective, and it’s been a solid option so far. The zinc oxide formula is the main reason I went with it. It doesn’t rely on the same chemical ingredients found in a lot of other sunscreens, which is a big plus if you’re trying to avoid that. It feels like a cleaner option overall. Coverage is good. It spreads evenly and holds up well, even with some water exposure. I’ve used it outdoors for extended periods, and it does its job without needing constant reapplication. It does leave a slight white cast at first, which is pretty typical with mineral sunscreens, but it fades in as you rub it in. Not completely invisible, but manageable. After a few uses, what stood out most is that it doesn’t have a strong smell and doesn’t irritate the skin. It just works without a lot of extras. Compared to standard chemical sunscreens, this feels more straightforward and less harsh, especially for regular use. For the price, it’s a great value. You’re getting strong sun protection without the added ingredients some people try to avoid. If you’re looking for a mineral-based sunscreen that’s effective and a bit cleaner in formulation, this is a solid choice.
